section 4 Target Audience

Brief Introduction of our Target Audience

Our target audience should be for people aged around sixteen to nineteen. We will focus on both males and females when we will begin the treatment for our music video, this will be effective as it will make our concept less niche and make the music video appeal to lots of people. Our genre of music is Pop-Rock, so our music video will appeal to a larger audience as the genre of music is very mainstream.

Lily Allen Smile.

Lily Allen: Smile

Aspects of perfrormance, mode of address.
the video uses a mix of direct and indirect mode of address, it is direct while lily is in her own bedroom singing the song as thoough she is talking to the audience. there are no dance routines so the performance is through the artist while she reminises on her past relationship with a boy.

Narrative.
the narrative appears to be linear but as we see part way thoruhg the video it is non linear as she has flash backs of cuddling her ex at the beginning. the beginning middle and end are clear, at the beginning she is singing in her room remembering the good times she used to have with a boy, she then thinks about the times he hurt her and gets her revenge on him, feeling quite happy that shes causing him pain, in the end it results in her getting her revenge and becoming happy and laughing about it.

how does thvideo create an image for the artist/band.
the video creates a funny image for the band as other girls can relate to it and laugh, although lily seems to be harsh to her ex, this portrays her as been a powerful independant woman which is the role model young girls need, lily is not superficial and she is a normal person making it easier for the whole audince to watch and not feel intimidated by her.

how do the visual elements relate to the song.
the video amplifies the lyrics, the lyrics are all about her ex cheating on her and how she feels about it and her reactions to it, in the video we see her act on her emotions and get him back for what he did so we can clearly see that the lyrics fit to the video very well.

mise en scene.
the setting is in a 'normal place' all the places are either streets, cafes or bedrooms which lets the audience know that the song is believable and nothing out of the ordinary. lily is wearinf trainers and big gold earrings suggesting she is a common girl and not a self obessed pretty girl. her trainers became her trademark after she became famous so its the costume item we will expect to see in most videos. the streets shes on are messy suggesting she is not in a posh area and her bedroom is pink and stereotypically girly.

use of camera.
the video starts off with small cuts showing lilys emotions and that she is upset about her breakup it then zooms in on her face showing she is sad as she looks into the camera and down at the floor. a panning shot is then used to show her in the bedroom. when in the cafe pov shots qre used to show lily and her ex looking at each other and talking but at the same time we can see lily is not interested in what her ex is saying and shes in her own world singing away. there is a montage of close ups to show each reaction to the breakup and a hand held camera shot when the boy is getting beaten up to emphasis the fact its lilys fault.

editing.
small cuts/cross cuts to show to conversation in the cafe between lily and her ex, this allows us to see each reaction when lily sings another line and he tries to talk to her. shot reverse shots and match on actions are used including eyeline mathces to allow us to see what lily sees all throughout er video. the editing is fast paced and upbeat and can be inspirational to girls who have lost a boyfriend.

representation.
the video represents lily as been a normal everyday average young girlbut instead of been stereotyped as a defensless woman she is portrayed a higer figure that can stand up for herself and shes not a girl to mess with. the video shows love, passion and also jealousy thorugh the connection lily and her ex still have. youths are streotyped in this video as been very arrogant, the ex gets beat up by an bunch of guys wearing hoodies which again empahsis the stereotyped youth of working class people.

special effects.
there were not many special effects as the video was kept simple to make it believable, the lighting from the dj at the club were special effects to show that every night club is obviously going to have lights. when lily is walking down the street it can be argued that it is a blue screen and shes not actually walking.

Genre and Audience.
the genre is pop, we can tell this as it has a feel good beat to it and it is catchy with rhyming lyrics that stick in your head even when you dont want them to. the audience would be mainly aimed at female teenages possible 13-19 as lily is only young herself and doesnt have much life experience young girls can relate to her when they think they have problems and a lot going on but they dont realise they have a lot more to come when there older.

The Chemical Brothers

The Chemical Brothers: Hey Boy Hey Girl

Aspects of performance.
there is no performance as the video is all narrative based by focusing on culture. The mode of address is indirect as the audience dont really feel a part of the video and there is no performance suggesting the artist is talking to the camera.

Narrative.
the narractive is pretty simple thorughout the video, it starts with a young girl going on a school trip and been obsessed with bones, she then falls and breaks her arm which is ironic as she is obessed with bones the focus for her is her broken arm. after that we see her instantly grow up while looking in a mirror, when she walks out the bathroom she is in a trampy club with everyone who seems to be on drugs, she leaves and goes home.

how does the video create an image for the band.
the chemical brothers are known for been a dance band to start off with so we cant really expect much performance through the video. the video creates a negative image for the band and promotes the band indirectly as it shows the dance culture to be going to raves and taking drugs, they all seem to have water bottles which backs up the thought of them been on drugs and been dehydrated.

how do the visual elements add to the song.
the video is filmed in a club/rave that looks like it could be underground (like an illegal rave) this is the place where you'd usually expect to hear this type of song. the visuals amplify the meaning by saying 'hey boy hey girl' over again as it does not have many lyrics in so the emphasis is on them words.

mise en scene.
the young girl is in a uniform to start off with but by the end when shes grown up she is dressed all in black seperating her from the rest making her seem plane but still attractive. everyone else in the rave are also dressed quite plain but stand out with the terrible dancing and make up that looks as though its been worn off. the video represents what people do and how they act at illegal raves.

use of camera.
a tracking shot is used at the beginning on the bus all the way up to the little girl it then zooms into the girl and what shes reading showing her fasination with bones. a boy leans over the back of his seat and spits on her book, a low angle shot looking up at the boy is used to show how the girl feels small and useless. later on this is reflected as the girl bumps into him and the camera view changes to a high angle shot looking down on the boy showing the girl is more dominant. tracking shots are used quite often when the video cuts to a new scene allowing the audience to see wherew abouts they are. a zoom is used to show the xray of the girl when sher breaks her arm followed by multiple reaction shots. a wide shot and cutaway is used in the club to show people dancing and having a good time.

Editing.
the editing pace is a mix of slow to fast suggesting that this fits in with the theme of drugs and alcohol affecting the body and brain. Match on action is used to show the young girl instantly change into a woman while she rubs her face looking in the mirror, this is also known as an elliptical edit as we dont see her whole life and her growing up. slow motion is used as the kids run showing the excitement and energy a child has, another slow motion is used when the girl falls over, this is an effective edit to use as the girl doesnt harm herself in the making of the video and it looks more realistic in the video than a fake fall.

Representation.
the video is indirectly promoting the dance culture as well as putting a negative view on drugs culture. its metaphorically saying that people that listen to dance music, the majority of them do drugs and satrat tripping. the girl is the big seperator is the video as she grew up obessed with bones and not drugs, this still seems to confuse the audience as the video doesnt really make sense which can again be related back to drug abuse.

Special effects.
graphic matches are used when the camera focuses on one thing then goes to something else using the same shot. the skeletons are speacial effect using CGI.

Genre and Audience.
the genre is dance as it relates back to the dance culture from years ago where the videos make no sense and there are not many lyrics, its there for you to dance to. the audience is 16-30 as they can start listening to it before going out clubbing to get them in the mood.
